The Disappearing Act - Breakdown 1/08

The effects for this film were the most challenging vfx work I've done. I didn't feel like I was in over my head though, which was great.

The thing that made this different was really the fact that there was a real deadline, and a real possibility that my work would end up in theaters. Unfortunately this didn't happen, but I spent a great deal of time trying to make the effects stand up to close scrutiny. Check out the film here.

Spider 10/07

This was a project I did for my VFX-Based Cinematography class. I actually shot, edited, modeled, textured, rigged, tracked, rendered and composited the elements for this project in one weekend. The only shot I'm really proud of is the first one of the spider coming off the wall. None of the other ones stand up to scrutiny because I was so rushed.

But I think it ended up looking pretty cool. :)

Pole Bend - Telekenisis 3/07

I did these shots for a movie that my roommate at SCAD made. The movie's about a guy who believes he has superpowers. But really doesn't.

Anyway, I modeled and animated the lightpole in Blender, and composited with Shake. The first shot was very challenging because there's a transition between the real lightpole and the digital one. For that shot, I used only 2D tracking. The second shot involved a 3D track done with Icarus. This was a really fun sequence to work on.

Juggling Ideas 12/06

Whoa... it's been almost two full years since I updated this page! I've been doing a lot of visual effects since "Magic Trick", but they've all been for bigger movie projects.

Recently I was told to create a 3.5 second self-portrait to be shown in front of one of my films, so this is what I made. I did this one fairly quickly (about 3 hours) and it's a little sloppy, but I think the illusion works. The lightbulbs were created and animated in Blender. This effect will will be used to a great extent on my next film.

Magic Trick 1/05

I had this idea pop into my head, and decided to try it. This clip involved basic tracking and compositing, so I didn't exactly accomplish anything new, but I did gain some more experience with Blender particles. (The flame was stock footage, but the smoke and sparks were particles.) It was fun to make. Hope it strikes you...

Telemedia Premiere 12/04
This was used as an intro to the "Telemedia Premiere"-- an exhibition of the films that my school puts out. For long line of people, I short my classmates (and teacher) 5 times, and stitched the clips together. To make it look more nighttime, I did some color correction, and replaced the sky with some dramatic clouds. And of course, the neon sign and spotlights are fake. I rushed through the tracking, so some of the elements are wobbly.

On the Brink 10/04

This is a REALLY cool shot, integrating a greenscreened character (that's me!) into a 3D environment. I was able to pull off the dramatic camera move (which essentially goes 360° around me) with only a swivel chair, a tripod, and a greenscreen.

Unidentified Hopping Object 8/04

Here is some rather mysterious footage of what seems to be a miniature robot... hopping around the house. This took almost 2 weeks to finish. I was going for a home-video sort of look, which is why you don't see anything important until you're already 17 seconds into the shot. Tracking was done with Icarus. 3D was done with Blender.

A Spaceship in Suburbia 9/04

This is all I've been working on for the past 3 months. While it doesn't look perfect, I consider this my best fx test to date. Probably cause it took so long...

I used two free programs-- Blender & Icarus-- to track and animate the spaceship. Icarus Import script (written by Alfredo de Greef) available here.

CLONING: Direct Interaction 10/03

One of the first effects I ever attempted was the basic masking involved in "cloning"-- duplicating a character in a shot. So here's the last one I've done, and the most complex. There's no dialogue, but it was my first attempt at direct interaction between clones: one of me passes a cup of orange juice to another of me. It took me quite a while to get this to look right.

NightCrawler 5/03

This is a test I did based on X-Men's Nightcrawler. I run up to punch my brother, but he has super-human powers which enable him to teleport. This was one of my first projects in After Effects.

People seem to like this one.
