Description

This quarter I'm taking "Lighting and Field", which is turning out to be a really good class. We're mainly learning about lighting techniques, filmmaking principles and shooting 16mm. For our first project we were to split up into groups of 5 and make a film. We had about a week and a half, from beginning to end.

Each of us rotated through the role of Director, Director of Photography, First Assistant Camera, Second Assistant Camera, and Grip. The director of photography is responsible for all the filmmaking aspects of their scene - the shots and the lighting - while the director concentrated mainly on the story and the performances.

So, my scene was the fireplace scene. I lit it with a pretty straightforward back cross-key lighting setup. There are definitely some problems (especially with the master shot), but I think the closeups look nice.

This assignment was essentially about lighting. We experimented with the lighting setups for each scene, and tried to make it look as though each scene progressed throughout the day. But I hope we've made a somewhat entertaining film as well as one that succeeds technically. There are definitely a lot of problems with it, but for the schedule we were on I think we did a fairly good job.
